A Kenton High School student has been charged with inducing panic after allegedly threatening to shoot someone.
Kenton Police Chief John Vermillion says 18-year-old Derick Craig was charged after an investigation by his officers.
He said students who overheard the threat told their parents, who then informed the Kenton Police Department.
“What was believed to have been overheard was that the suspect had threatened to shoot someone else. It panicked a lot of parents. Our dispatcher on second shift was being overwhelmed by concerned parents,” said Vermillion.
The school superintendent said she got word of the threat Thursday night.
By morning, she said she sent an all-call to parents saying students should feel safe at school.
However, as a precaution, she told parents that there would be a heightened police presence all day Friday.
The school superintendent and city’s police chief said they took the threat and the parents’ concerns seriously
Vermillion said his officers interviewed witnesses, who led them to Craig. Police arrested Craig on a charge of inducing panic.
Inside his house, officers said they found marijuana, drug paraphernalia, pills and hallucinogenic mushrooms.
“The bag of mushrooms. That's nothing we see in this area very often,” said Vermillion.
The chief said his officers also recovered nearly two dozen guns, including rifles, shotguns and hand guns.
10TV reached out to the Craig household for a response, but no comment was immediately made.
At school on Friday, parents and students were well aware of the threat, but confident the scare will remain only that.
“I didn't really want to go to school just in case something did happen, but everything turned out alright,” said Kenton High School senior Kyle Newland.
“You just have to be vigilant of where you go, and who you hang out with and listen,” said Kenton parent Mary Newland.
Craig currently is being held at the Marion Multi-County Jail.
