Police and neighbors are on the lookout for a couple who allegedly tried to abduct a young child.
The Windsor Subdivision in New Albany is one of those neighborhoods where residents take pride in their homes.
It’s a close knit community with well-manicured lawns.
On Sunday just before 6 p.m., police say a man and a woman in a four-door vehicle pulled right up to a 10-year-old boy riding his bike.
The boy's mother says the man rolled down his window, smiled at him and asked him if he wanted some candy.
“The child perceived this as a threat and rode his bike home,” said Sgt. Kris Daniels with the New Albany Police Department. “At that time he told his mother, and then the mother called the police department, which initiated a response."
Karen Wiegand lives in the same neighborhood and says the incident forced her to talk to her 9-year-old son about the dangers of talking to strangers.
“It scares children, but I think it's important as a community to be aware that this is going on,” she said.
After the incident, police put out a “Code Red” phone message, alerting home owners to be on the lookout for the couple driving a newer model dark sedan.
“It's a quick way we can get information out for the safety and welfare of the citizens,” said Daniels. “It also opens up a channel of communication for others to contact the police department.”
Officers searched the area and alerted other area police departments, but the couple and car were not found.
“In these situations, we don't know if a crime has been committed, however we do have an interest in finding these people and talking to them,” Daniels added. “Anytime a child is involved, we take it very seriously, and we just want to be sure."
Wiegand said she just wants some answers – especially, why this even happened in her neighborhood
“I hope parents are going to be aware so the couple will be caught," she added.
Police said the car left the neighborhood and headed south on state Route 605 toward state Route 62.
Police said the woman in the vehicle was described as in her 30s with short blonde hair.
The man is described in his 20s with red hair and wearing glasses.
