Both of Ohio's U.S. Senators were in Ohio Monday during the shooting at the Washington Navy Yard.
Both had had originally planned to return to Washington Monday afternoon.
Staff members say both Republican Sen. Rob Portman and Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown were now planning to return to Washington Tuesday morning.
"My thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and families of this devastating act of violence," said Brown. "We should commend the bravery of our first responders who helped to eliminate the immediate threat and treat those who were wounded. As a nation, we will face this tragedy together in order to learn more about the shootings and the appropriate way to move forward."
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid canceled the scheduled votes for Monday in wake of the tragedy.
