A company that canceled a Mud Run event in Hocking Hills says it will not be able to pay all the people back who have already submitted money.
On Tuesday, 10TV talked to people who had registered for the Great American Mud Run, only to find out via email that it was called off.
Kim Metzler told 10TV that she had paid $73.
"And we weren't offered any explanation or reason, no refunds, nothing,” Metzler said.
The company also has called off other Mud Runs, including one in Tennessee.
On Thursday, the organizers released the following letter:
"Thank you for contacting The Great American Mud Run in regards to the upcoming event we had scheduled in Logan, OH. This event was to be held on Saturday, September 14, 2013 at Kaeppner’s Woods in Logan, Ohio. We regrettably had to cancel this event and registered participants were notified of this cancellation on September 9, 2013.
The type of events we put on are extremely expensive to execute in a fun and most importantly safe manner. The number of participants registered for our Logan, Ohio event were significantly lower than we projected. We had just over 400 registered participants at the time of cancellation. Unfortunately, we spent heavily in marketing, put down a significant deposit with the venue owner, and incurred significant up front equipment rental expenses. This has left our company insolvent.
As is standard in our industry, we have a no refund policy that all participants agree to when registering for our events. Participants agree to this no refund policy by typing their initials during the registration checkout process. The no refund policy states:
“I hereby understand and acknowledge that all fees and associated costs (including optional products purchased and donations), paid in registration for The Great American Mud Run are NOT REFUNDABLE FOR ANY REASON, under any circumstances, including but not limited to injury, a scheduling conflict, and/or event cancellation.”
We understand that registered participants affected by this cancellation are upset and want resolve. Although all registered participants have agreed to the above stated no refund policy, we are trying to make this situation right. To date, we have been able to provide refunds to over 200 of the registered Ohio participants, prior to the company becoming insolvent. We realize this is not 100% of the participants and are currently looking for other ways to refund the remaining participants.
Lastly, we would like to clarify any questions that exist regarding Wounded Wear’s partnership with The Great American Mud Run. This partnership only extended to the fundraising aspects pertaining directly to Wounded Wear. Wounded Wear is not connected in any way to The Great American Mud Run or the registration process for The Great American Mud Run event series. All funds raised by participants for Wounded Wear went directly to Wounded Wear. All monies were processed through Crowdrise, an online fundraising platform, and were deposited directly into Wounded Wear’s Crowdrise account. The Great American Mud Run had no connection to these funds. All funds raised and received by Wounded Wear are being used to directly support Wounded Wear’s mission of helping Warriors Rediscover the Hero Within, through free clothing, modifications, events, and opportunities for Warriors, their families and families of the fallen as well as raising the national awareness of the sacrifice of wounded warriors and families of the fallen.

The Ohio Attorney General's office received six complaints about the group, and the Better Business Bureau is also investigating.
