Investigators are trying to figure out who torched the Family Missionary Baptist Church's van in Southeast Columbus.
"I was really shocked at first," said church member Gloria Roberts.
Columbus Fire Officials responded to a van fire on Oakwood Avenue early Sunday morning. No one was hurt but according to the church, the van is a total loss.
"One of the members called me today and said whose driving the van today? And I had to tell them, well the van has been torched," said Pastor Frederick V. LaMarr.
The van is used to transport members to events and church services.
Authorities are calling the fire suspicious after they say they found traces of lighter fluid inside the van.
"What first went through my mind was somebody may be upset the change we're trying to do in the community," LaMarr told 10TV's Jason Frazer. "If somebody does wrong, we speak out against the wrongdoing."
Investigators said tomorrow they will review videos cameras in the church's parking lot to try to identify the suspects. Meanwhile, the small tragedy may in the end bring this church family closer together.
"We'll just carpool to get the members here," said LaMarr. "Maybe this is something that will speed up the trustees to say ok I need another van."
Investigators are asking anyone with information to call the Columbus Division of Fire at 614-645-3011.
