Relative: Cleveland Kidnapper Lacked Victims’ Strength

UPDATED: Thursday September 5, 2013 10:28 AM

A victim's relative says Ariel Castro's suicide shows he was not a strong person like the three women he held captive in his home for a decade.

Tina Miller said Thursday that she was shocked to learn that the Cleveland man who kidnapped, raped and imprisoned her cousin Amanda Berry and two other women had hung himself in an Ohio prison Tuesday only a month into his life sentence.

Miller, of Lorain in northeast Ohio, said killing yourself is not strength, "surviving it is strength."

She said she hoped the death would allow Berry's daughter, fathered by Castro in captivity, to move on more quickly with her life.

Ohio's prison system is reviewing how Castro managed to hang himself with a bed sheet while in protective custody.
