Columbus police were investigating a shooting early Thursday morning outside a Kroger in east Columbus.
Police said the shooting happened in the 2000 block of East Main Street around 1:40 a.m.
Officers said 30-year-old Willie L. Casey was walking his dog when he was shot in the upper body near a COTA bus stop near a Kroger store.
Police said Casey was spotted earlier in the Kroger parking lot looking for a cell phone to borrow to make a call and get a ride.
That's when he was confronted by a man and shot numerous times.
A Kroger security guard saw the shooting and called police. Other witnesses also called authorities.
“He’s in the street.. the guy’s in the street,” said a 911 caller. “The guy that did it, the guy with the guy ran down the street.”
Casey was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:45 a.m.
Casey's mother says she's still in disbelief.
"I still, still can't say my son is gone, and I just … How do mothers bury their kids?" said Carla Casey.
Willie Casey leaves behind three small children.
“I’m sitting here so numb, okay, to take my baby from me that I will never see again alive,” added Casey.
Officers shut down East Main Street at Nelson Road while they investigated the shooting.
It was reopened around 8:30 a.m.
There is no known motive for the shooting.
The only description of the suspect was that he was wearing a red muscle shirt and white shorts.
