Residents in one Delaware County community are upset that a McDonald’s restaurant is moving into their neighborhood.
They said they are worried about smells, traffic and declining home values.
Right now, the property in front of the Olentangy Crossings subdivision is vacant, but McDonald’s plans to build a location on 2.3 acres at the southwest corner of Coal Bend Drive and U.S. Route 23.
Beth Wilbanks is a resident of the nearby neighborhood,
“I'm worried about sitting out in my backyard at 6 at night having a BBQ and listening to someone order a No. 4 in the drive-thru,” Wilbanks said.
She said she and her husband knew when they purchased their home, nearby commercial development was a certainty, but they never thought fast food.
“Our home owners association assured us in the past that the land, there are limitations on what could be built on that land, and that clearly was not true,” she said.
The property manager for the neighborhood told 10TV he stands by his statement and there are limitations to the type of development, which are defined in the zoning text.
Wilbanks said she and others plan to work with the township to reach out to McDonald’s. She said they want the owner to change things to make the restaurant a better neighbor.
She said it would be nice if the owner would alter where the speakers are placed, limit the hours of operation and work with the other nearby businesses.
Wilbanks said her neighbors and the township also plan to reach out to the owners of the property to see if they would be willing to keep other fast food restaurants from building there.
“We are worried; there is a lot of empty land here, and what’s going to come after this?” Wilbanks said.
Wilbanks said if McDonald’s isn't in favor of working with the residents, they may pursue legal action.
A representative from the company says McDonald’s works very hard to be a good neighbor and the owner of the restaurant would be willing to meet with residents.
McDonald’s hasn’t set a date for groundbreaking.
