Escaped Inmate Found In Wildlife Area Of Highland County

A man wanted after escaping from the London Correctional Institution was located Saturday afternoon.

Greenfield police officers confirm they found Spencer Johnson near the county lines of Highland, Fayette and Ross around 2:30 p.m.

Johnson, 28, a Greenfield native, was transferred back to the London Correctional Institution later on Saturday.

Greenfield police told 10TV News that they had received a number of tips that Johnson was staying in a wildlife area south of Greenfield.

On Saturday, they received a tip about someone suspicious near a bike path just south of Greenfield.

They said Johnson surrendered immediately when he was apprehended. Police said they thought he might try to return home so they had been on the lookout for him.

10TV spoke with one of the officers, who found Johnson deep in the brushes.

Greenfield Police Officer Brian McNeil said the high brush, hot weather, and swarms of bugs provided a challenge, but he said they carefully combed the area, spotted Johnson, and arrested him without incident.

“It's definitely a moment of relief because a lot of people had been putting in extra time, tracking down leads.  It's just good to know he's back in prison, where he belongs,” said McNeil.

Authorities said that Johnson took off from a trash crew near the jail on Aug. 5.

He was being held on a burglary charge.

Authorities said they also believed that Johnson stole a pick-up truck in Madison County during his escape.
