A woman is recovering at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center after being sexually assaulted and stabbed in her northeast Columbus home.

Her husband told 10TV on Thursday the man accused of the crime is a family friend -- one they were trying to help.

David Hudson, 30, was hospitalized across town at Grant Medical Center, while his alleged victim struggled to recover from multiple stab wounds and other injuries.

Columbus police charged Hudson with rape, kidnapping and felonious assault in connection with the incident that happened shortly after midnight Wednesday.

A neighbor heard the woman's screams for help and called 911.

"I'm in my room and I hear somebody out back. They're screaming help, saying they've been stabbed. I didn't go outside or anything,” the caller told the dispatcher.

10TV found Hudson has a lengthy criminal history that dates back to 2007, when he was charged with kidnapping for the first time. That charge was dismissed, and he instead pleaded guilty to an assault charge.

He's also had several theft charges and recently served time in jail.

The alleged victim's husband told 10TV that they were letting the man spend the night at their home to help him get back on his feet.

Detectives said Hudson was alone with the victim when the attack took place.

Neighbors say the woman jumped from the second-floor window to try to get away.

"She was on the porch, is what I know. And that's when people started noticing and then our neighbor over here is the one who called the cops," said neighbor Christina Huber.

Neighbors were still trying to come to terms with what happened to the newly-married couple.

"They're really nice people. She cares about anyone and anything. She loves cats more than anything. She'll rescue any cat that she sees and he's really nice, too," Huber said. "But they stay to themselves, too. They don't get in a lot of people's business."

Hudson is scheduled to be arraigned on the charges in Franklin County Municipal Court Friday morning.
