Columbus police said that an officer shot a suspect Monday morning around 11 a.m.
The officer was near Mooberry and S. 18th streets, southeast of downtown, near Nationwide Children's Hospital.
Officers identified the man shot as Orlando Smith, 27.
Officials said that Smith was stopped by the officer for an outstanding traffic warrant, and as the officer approached, he got out of the vehicle with a gun.
Columbus Police Sgt. Rich Weiner described what he heard from the officer's radio transmission.
"He said the suspect pulled into an alley and within a matter of seconds, it was shots fired, officer in trouble call," said Weiner.
Smith was shot twice and taken to Grant Medical Center in stable condition. He was expected to survive his injuries.
Police said the sergeant was uninjured.
Witness Massie Lawson was having coffee in her yard when she heard eight or nine shots.
"The sirens were immediately after the gunshots that I heard," said Lawson. "It's just not uncommon in this neighborhood to hear and see those things, so when you hear stuff like that, you just let the police know and eventually the neighborhood will get better when people call when you hear something."
Officials said the suspect's gun was recovered at the scene.
