Officials at Columbus State Community College issued a crime alert after a rape was reported near campus Monday morning.

According to Columbus police, the rape was reported near the 32S Parking Lot at Jefferson Avenue and Long Street.

Police said that a 19-year-old woman was raped in a tan minivan just before 9 a.m.

The person who was raped was not a CSCC student, but officials said that the crime occurred near a parking lot used by hundreds of college students.

The suspect in the case is a black male with a beard. He appears to be between 35 to 40 years old. He was wearing a blue striped shirt and was in a tan minivan.

Students said that they were glad for the warning.

“My first impression was to just watch my surroundings, and I try to stay around a group of people, just so I can be seen, so I try not to walk by myself,” said Clarissa Dawson, a sophomore at the college.

Anyone with information for police is asked to call 614-645-4545.
