Central Ohioans Prep For Red, White And Boom

Many across central Ohio are planning their trips down to Red, White and BOOM on Wednesday night.

Many have their favorite spots to watch the fireworks, but getting close can be a challenge.

Depending on who you talk to, everyone seems to have the best way to get in and the best place to park.

But most everyone agrees that it is best to let someone else do the driving.

“It’s pretty tough,” said Lisa Wolfe of Columbus. “We walk, quite a few blocks. Maybe a half mile, but it’s worth it.”

Wolfe said the secret is getting downtown early enough to find a parking spot west of the river.

She says she likes sitting by COSI to watch the fireworks.

Officials with the Central Ohio Transit Authority say they have the best option.

“Red, White and BOOM is an amazing day for central Ohio, but it gets real crowded,” said Brian Hoyt of COTA. “What COTA is doing is trying to make it a little easier.”

Hoyt said that in addition to expanded service on some of its local lines, there will be seven express lines from park-and-ride facilities in other areas such as Westerville, Gahanna and Dublin.

“For $5.50, you get a round-trip ticket. You don’t have to worry about traffic. You don’t have to worry about parking, and you don’t have to worry about where you are going to go to find your car later,” Hoyt said.

Once you get downtown, you will want to find the best place to see the fireworks.

Those looking for a family-friendly option should consider Huntington Park, where there will be several games for children inside the park. You can also sit in the outfield and watch the fireworks.

If you take one of the special COTA buses downtown, you get in for free.

Wolfe said she still has her heart set on watching from COSI.

“It’s a good view,” Wolfe said. “We used to sit by the hill at Vet’s Memorial, but you kind of can’t sit there anymore, but it is just kind of our spot.”
