Abortion-Rights Supporters Protest Item Added To Ohio Budget

UPDATED: Thursday June 27, 2013 5:25 PM

Abortion-rights supporters are protesting restrictions on the procedure slipped into the state budget at the last minute.

The Ohio Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice, which supports abortion, scheduled a rally Thursday ahead of votes planned in the Ohio House and Senate on Ohio's $62 billion, two-year state operating budget.

Advocates oppose an 11th hour budget amendment that would require Ohio abortion providers to inform pregnant women seeking the procedure if a fetal heartbeat is present. They also oppose the budget's effective defunding of Planned Parenthood, whose health care offerings to low-income patients can include abortions.

Created Equal, a group opposing abortion, has scheduled a counter-rally to protest Planned Parenthood.

Republican Ohio Gov. John Kasich opposes abortion but has not said what budget vetoes he plans.
