Police said a man arrested for rape earlier in the week is now officially tied to three other rapes from the past few years.
Gary Naphier was arrested on Monday evening near a relative’s apartment on Fitzroy Drive after a brief foot chase.
He was arrested after he allegedly raped a woman who lived nearby earlier in the day.
At the time of the arrest, police said that he was a suspect in three rapes dating back to 2011. The victims in the alleged rapes ranged from 18 to 45.
On Wednesday evening, police said that DNA evidence tested by the state Bureau of Criminal Investigation officially tied him to three other rapes.
Naphier is a suspect in a rape from April 13, 2013. In that crime, a woman who was walking down Fitzroy Avenue was approached by Naphier.
When she got home, she left her apartment door unlocked. Later, Naphier entered the apartment and allegedly raped her. Police said that Naphier left his cell phone as he fled.
The second incident was reported from July 29, 2012. A woman said that she was hanging out with her friends on Core Place when she left to go to the store.
According to police, when she returned, Naphier approached her and told her that her friends had gone to his house. She followed him and then he allegedly raped her.
The third incident occurred on Sept. 16, 2012 along Peters Avenue, according to police.
Police said that a woman was working the corner of Hudson Street and Peters Avenue, when Naphier asked her if she wanted to smoke crack.
The woman followed him into a vacant house, where he raped her.
Naphier is currently charged with rape in connection with Monday’s alleged sexual assault. Other charges could be filed in connection with the other three alleged rapes.
