Police Break Window To Rescue 2 Children Left Home Alone For 'Extended Period Of Time'

UPDATED: Wednesday June 12, 2013 6:25 PM

Police had to break through a back window to get to the 9-year-old girl and 3-year-old boy who were left home alone, police said.

A person who lives in the complex says police told her the children were hungry.

"She said she hadn't eaten in three days and she hadn't seen her mother in four days," said a neighbor who asked not to be named.

10TV News obtained a police report that indicated the children were left home alone for "an extended period of time."

Neighbors say they haven't seen the children's mother since early Sunday morning.

"I was in tears, when they carried the little kids outside I was in tears because no child should have to go through that," the neighbor said.

Police say the mother never came home when officers were at the home at around midnight, and neighbors say she still hadn't shown on Wednesday morning.

"Maybe this is the wakeup call. She needs to make sure her children are safe," the neighbor said.

Police say they contacted Franklin County Children Services to find a safe, temporary home for the children.

Police say the mother's whereabouts are unknown, but she could face criminal charges including neglect.
