A medical helicopter was requested for a woman who was struck by a garbage truck in Westerville. According to Westerville police, the 32-year-old woman was struck at Crescent Drive at Crescent Court.
Westerville police told 10TV News that a Rumpke garbage truck backed over the person.
Police said that it appeared the driver of the truck did not see the woman walking along Illinois Avenue. The woman lives in the area and was walking to the library, which was only a few blocks away.
The condition of the person struck was not immediately released, but police said it looked as though she would survive her injuries.
Rumpke officials issued a statement late Tuesday morning. They said that the truck was performing a weekly trash collection route at the time of the crash.
Rumpke officials said they were working to figure out how the crash happened.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with those involved," said Rumpke Safety Manager Randy Broadright. "We appreciate the fast response of emergency crews who were there to assist the injured. We will continue to cooperate with authorities to investigate what happened."
The cause of the crash remained under investigation.
