Mother Charged After Baby Found Wandering Alone In Street

A Marion mother is being forced to make changes after two children in her care were found wandering alone in a busy street.

Jessica Fry, 20, is charged with two counts of child endangering after her one-year-old son and three year-old niece were discovered in the street by a neighbor.

It happened Wednesday morning in the 500 block of Pear Street.

"He was crossing the street by himself and I kind of stood there for a minute to see if there was an adult around and there wasn't," said Randy Sanderson. Sanderson called police.

"I took them by the hand and waited for officers," he said.

Fry said she was asleep at the time and thought the children were safe.

"My niece must have opened the door and let him out." Fry said.

Fry was arrested and spent three days in jail. Children's Services ordered her to install childproof locks on the doors.

Her son is now being cared for by a relative. Fry says she can only have supervised visits until Children's Services decides otherwise.

Sanderson says he was glad he spotted the children.

"It could have been a disaster, but there was an angel watching over the child, not me but somebody was," he said.
