Task Force Formed To Help Sift Through Tips About Officer Attack

UPDATED: Friday April 26, 2013 5:38 PM

Genoa Township officials said in a news conference on Friday that they have received dozens of tips about an officer who was severely beaten on Thursday morning.

According to the Genoa Township Police Department, the department has received so many tips about two possible suspects that they are forming a task force to sift through them.

The task force will be made up of members from the Delaware County Sheriff's Office, Westerville Division of Police, Columbus Division of Police, Delaware Police, Powell Police Department, Blendon Township Police Department and the FBI.

”We’re confident that we’re going to find these two,” said Genoa Township Police Chief Robert Taylor.

Chief Taylor said that the officer who was attacked, Lt. Greg Yurkovich, has been released from Grant Medical Center and is remembering more about the attack.

Yurkovich, a 14-year veteran of the police force, suffered a concussion during the attack, which took place at about 5:30 a.m. Thursday in the 6900 block of Sunbury Road near Hoover Reservoir.

Taylor said Yurkovich remembers two suspects. He recalls one of the suspects telling the other to back off.

”‘Stop, stop! That’s enough. Let’s get out of here.’ That’s the only thing he heard them saying,” Taylor said.

Police said they believed the men who beat the officer were stealing items from boats.

Authorities said the men were driving a white work van with windows in the rear.

Police said that one of the men was described as white, 6 feet 1 inch tall to 6 feet 4 inches tall and about 300 pounds.

The second person was described as white with a medium build.

Anyone with information is asked to call Delaware County dispatchers at 740-833-2800.
