A large crane fire was reported Thursday morning along state Route 668 near Interstate 70 in Licking County, south Brownsville.
The fire was reported around 8:15 a.m. state Route 668 was closed while emergency crews were on scene.
The Capital City Group which operates the crane told 10TV that its worker escaped safely. They believe the fire started because of a leak in the hydraulic line.
The crane was not in operation but was being transported on a flatbed at the time of the fire.
Crews said that the fire was so intense that it melted a portion of the highway.
“Our trucks parked about 100 feet away, and you could feel the heat from the fully engulfed crane,” said Ben Hupp with the National Trail Volunteer Fire Department. “It sounded like a cannon going off. We have some members that live 5 miles away, and they said they could feel it near their homes.”
The department said the crane was worth about $3 million.
A HAZMAT team was called to the area due to fluid leaking from the crane.
