Mother Says Allowing Principal, Teacher Back On The Job After Son Was Injured Sends Wrong Message

UPDATED: Thursday April 11, 2013 5:24 PM

A mother is upset after she said her son’s principal and teacher were given a “slap on the wrist.”

South Mifflin Elementary School Principal Andrew Smith and teacher Courtney Plummer were allowed to return to work earlier this week after an investigation into failing to report an incident involving a 10-year-old boy.

The parents of the student say their son had to have surgery because he was hurt when a teacher incorrectly placed  him in a therapeutic body sock.

The body sock, which looks like a thin sleeping bag, is used to calm children with special needs. The sock covers the child, including the face.

Amatullah Shields says the outcome of hearings, regarding what happened to 10-year-old Naqis makes one thing clear:

"It is sending the message that it is OK to abuse these children and nothing will happen,” Shields said.

The teacher involved, Courtney Plummer, was suspended as well as the  school principal, Andrew Smith.

"I think it's insane that it has been proven that she went against the IEP and my child was harmed and she is given a slap on the wrist and she is allowed to return to school" said Shields

While Franklin County Children Services says it can't discuss an individual case, the family shared with 10TV the letter it received from the agency regading its investigation into the matter.

The agency substantiated the family's claims that their son  was the victim of neglect at the hands of teacher Courtney Plummer.

Shields says this family is not done fighting.

"I don't know what that means for me, but at the end of the day I have to protect my children. I cannot allow them to be harmed or become failures at the hands of others."
