Stranger Comes To Rescue After Woman Is Attacked In Grocery Store Parking Lot

UPDATED: Tuesday April 9, 2013 10:50 AM

Police say a stranger came to the rescue after a woman was attacked in a grocery store parking lot.

The victim, a 45 year old Westerville woman, tells police she was walking out of the Genoa Township Kroger on State Route 3 around 3 p.m. Monday when she was attacked.

"(The suspect) began striking her according to the victim multiple times," says Genoa Township Police Sgt. Rich Lyon. "Eventually she fell to the ground where he continued to drag and pull on the purse, while striking her until he got control of the purse."

A 64 year old shopper, who asked not to be identified, tells 10tv's Glenn McEntyre he was in the same parking lot when he heard a woman scream that she was being robbed.

He says he dropped his groceries and started running toward the screams, and that's when he saw the woman struggling with a young man.

He yelled to the suspect to get off, and chased him around the back of the store before catching up with him.

Police say the man held the suspect in place until they arrived and took him into custody.

"I think it also shows well of the community how everybody's willing to help out, and it really shows the community sense that people are watching out for others," says Lyon.

Still, he says, police do not encourage citizens to intervene without knowing what they're getting into.  "Obviously we don't want people putting their lives in jeopardy. Because you never know who you're chasing."

The victim was treated at the hospital for injuries from the attack.

She was too shaken up to talk with us, but her husband says he owes a debt of gratitude to the stranger who helped her.

The 14 year old suspect is in juvenile detention, facing a felony charge of aggravated robbery.
