A death certificate released this week confirms a Ross Correctional Institution inmate killed earlier this year died of strangulation.
Corrections officers found 34-year-old Michael Ferrara dead in his cell on Jan. 11.
The Chillicothe Eagle Gazette reports Ferrara was just a few days from being released from prison for burglary and misuse of credit cards.
Ohio State Highway Patrol investigated the incident, which at the time was classified as a "suspicious death."
Officials held off calling it a homicide until the investigation was complete.
State police have not released the name of any suspect in the case.
