A judge has set a $1 million bond for the man accused of strangling his mother before trying to kill himself.

Terri Menendez was found dead in her apartment on Monday. Police say that she was strangled.

A heartbroken James Dunkle talked about the loss of his former daughter-in-law, and news that his oldest grandson is charged with strangling her.

"Never would you dream of something of this nature, it's just, like I say, it's tragic," said James Dunkle.

Hilliard Police said Terri Menendez was killed on Good Friday. They said her body spent the entire holiday weekend stuffed in a closet inside her Westham Way apartment in Hilliard.

Franklin County Prosecutors said the defendant subsequently did give a statement, indicating that they had had an argument on March 29 after which he had strangled her and placed her in the closet so no one would find her.

Co-workers at Edward Jones in Grove City, where Menendez worked as a financial adviser, grew concerned when she did not show up for work.

That's when Hilliard Police said they found her body, and her son 22-year-old Tyler Dunkle "unconscious and unresponsive" after an overdose of pills and alcohol.

And while James Dunkle called the incident shocking and tragic, he told 10TV that he wants his grandson to take responsibility.

"I just think he has to be cooperative with the investigation. I think he just has to tell -- what took place, what he did."

Dunkle said he had not seen his grandson in months, but wasn't aware of any problems between mother and son.

And while he has questions, he worries the answers will bring little comfort.

"I lost a grandson, and you've got a situation there where she's lost a daughter and a grandson. And I'm not sure you can put it into words," said James Dunkle.
