Building inspectors were called out to the scene where an SUV struck a west Columbus apartment Tuesday night.
The driver of the black SUV told police something got caught under his brake pedal and he couldn't stop.
The SUV slammed into the utility room of an apartment in the 3400 block of Stalling Court around 9:45 p.m.
A man and his 8-year-old son were inside the apartment and escaped unharmed.
They were about 20 feet away when the SUV crashed inside.
"It sounded like a bomb going off. I just finished watching 'Zero Dark Thirty' earlier in the night. It kind of creeped me out a little bit after watching a movie like that and something happening like that an hour or two later." Craig Neavill said.
Police say it's possible the home may have to be condemned due to structural damage.
