Scam Targets People Seeking Unemployment Compensation

UPDATED: Wednesday March 20, 2013 1:14 PM

Two new telephone scams are targeting people who may be seeking unemployment compensation.

Officials with the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services say both scams involving trying to steal the victims' identities.

The first scam involves a telephone caller telling the unemployment seeker that a job is available, but claims the individual must provide a credit card number to be hired.

In the other scam, the caller provides general information about unemployment compensation before seeking the individual's Social Security number or other personal information.

The agency says it would never request credit card information over the phone. Employees with ODJFS identify themselves by name, title and purpose for any call.

Ohioans with questions about their unemployment compensation can call 877-OHIO-JOB or visit the ODJFS website.
