Lakewood Local Schools in Hebron in Licking County were closed Wednesday after a vehicle crashed into the football field early Wednesday morning.
Representatives from the Licking County Sheriff's Office say it started with a traffic stop on National Road in Hebron and led to a chase about 2:30 a.m.
The driver took off from the scene, starting a four minute chase.
Authorities followed the man until he crashed near the school. His vehicle went airborne and barely cleared a 6-foot fence before landing on the field.
"I got a text from one of my players asking me if I'd seen the field. It sort of worked on me, so I had to come over and see for myself," said Lakewood High School football coach Rex Sponhaltz.
The driver fled the scene on foot after crashing the vehicle.
The sheriff’s office said the superintendent decided to cancel school because the suspect had not been located.
The district reportedly wants to make sure the suspect was not hiding near the school.
