Police Investigating Dozens Of Storage Unit Break-Ins

UPDATED: Tuesday March 19, 2013 5:43 PM

Columbus Police were investigating dozens of break-ins at Lewis Center storage units.

Police told 10TV News that between 40 and 50 units were broken into at the Mini-Storage Deport on South Old State Road over the weekend.

People who rent the units are taking inventory of their property.

Russ Shah's unit was one of them. He tells us it looked like the thieves used bolt cutters to bust the locks and get inside his unit, which he said was full of furniture and stuff for his house.

“A few things are missing. I don't know exactly what, because it was in a bag. I'll have to check with my wife and see what was in that bag,” Shah said.

10TV tried to talk with the property manager, but he was not immediately available.

Columbus police say he told them yesterday the thieves cut the fence surrounding the units to get inside.

Mike Naveau stopped by to see if he was victim,

“I was one of the lucky ones apparently, maybe because of the lock we had, but mine was not broken into,” Naveau said.

An employee told 10TV News the facility is monitored with surveillance cameras and there is a secure entrance, but it appears the extra security wasn't enough to keep criminals away.

It could be a while before police know everything that was stolen. They say each victim will need to file a police report.

There are no suspects at this time.
