Whitehall city council members decided Tuesday night to table an ordinance aimed at cracking down on shopping cart thefts.
Council member Leslie LaCorte said council decided to delay the vote to give local stores, like Kroger, a chance to come up with a plan to prevent the thefts.
The ordinance would also penalize stores for not following rules to prevent theft. Stores would be required to lock up their carts after hours.
The ordinance would make it a misdemeanor, which could lead to a $150 fine.
City council will vote on the ordinance at their next meeting in two weeks.
