Columbus To Spend $7 Million On Parks, Pavement, Bike Paths

UPDATED: Monday March 18, 2013 2:45 PM

Twenty-five Columbus neighborhoods are scheduled to receive face lifts, as part of the 2012 Urban Infrastructure Recovery Fund Program.

Ken Fuller and his dog Daisy say going to their park is part of their daily routine.

“Daisy comes out and chases the squirrels every day,” Fuller said.

They walk around Harder Lake in Westgate Park.

But, as life-long west siders, they know their park can use some help.

“It gets flooded often, you can see that now - the geese are a big problem. And the lake has been in a state of disrepair for a long time,” Fuller said.

Lucky for them, the park is finally receiving about $300,000 to fix those problems.

It's one of 25 Columbus neighborhoods selected for Capital Improvement Projects.

“Between that, and the casino, it's all good for the west side,” Fuller added.

The short north area will receive $250,000. That money will fund a new parking study and improvements for existing parking lots.

“A lot of times happy hour and in the evenings it's a lot worse,” said Utica resident Sheena Hankins.

Hilliard resident Amy Driscoll agreed.

“It's building up around here a lot of restaurants, always could use more parking for that," said Driscoll.

The city is also dishing out money to fix sidewalks on Brentnell Avenue from Argyle to Mock Road in North Columbus. Smith Road will see new pavement and sidewalks from Lockbourne Road to Fairwood Avenue. Street lights will be added on McCutcheon Road from Stelzer Road to Sunbury Road.

Plus, there's good news for bike riders. City officials said that $375,000 will be used to finish the last leg of the Olentangy Trail near Harrison Park.

It's money park goers say is well spent.

“Daisy's going to love it,” Fuller said.

On Monday, Mayor Coleman will ask City Council to approve legislation that will fund 44 projects totaling more than $6.8 million in 25 central city neighborhoods.
