Newark police issued a warning on Wednesday about a scam targeting older adults.
According to the police department, a number of older adults have reported receiving calls from people who told them they had won the lottery.
The scammers have tried to convince the victims to go to a store or pharmacy and either send money via Western Union or to purchase a Green Dot card and give them the serial number on the back of it.
If the victim cooperates and sends the money, the victim is hounded to send more money, police said.
The scammers also have sent police and fire personnel to the victims’ homes to perform “welfare checks” when the victims have stopped responding to the scammers’ requests for money.
They have also called couriers to pick up the victims and take them to banks or stores to send money to the scammers.
Newark police warned people to talk to their older friends and relatives to warn them about scammers. They also suggested that people never give out information over the telephone and to never wire money to someone you don’t know.
