A bullet from a Pataskala police officer fired at a raccoon ricocheted into a nearby home and struck a resident, according to The Newark Advocate.
The paper reported that an officer was called to a home in the 190 block of Summit Glen Drive at about 2:25 p.m. on Sunday on a report of a sick raccoon that was in a ditch.
The officer decided to shoot the raccoon in the ditch because it provided a safe background, according to the Advocate.
When the officer shot the raccoon, the bullet went through the animal, bounced off the ground and went through a neighboring home and struck a woman.
By the time the bullet struck the woman, it was traveling so slowly that it struck the woman and fell to the ground without injuring the woman, the paper reported.
Police officials said that the officer followed department policies.
