Ohio Fire Marshal Larry Flowers is encouraging residents to replace batteries in their smoke alarms as they turn their clocks ahead one hour this weekend.
Flowers says the time change early Sunday should remind people to switch the batteries and then test detectors monthly to ensure they operate correctly. He says the cost of a few dollars for each new battery is a small price for a family's safety.
Thirty fire fatalities have been reported to the fire marshal's office this year.
Ohio had 106 reported fire-related deaths last year, compared with 128 in 2011 and 155 in 2010. In more than two-thirds of the 2012 fatalities, homes lacked a smoke detector or it couldn't be determined whether one was present.
