Apartment Residents Evacuated After Early Tuesday Morning Fire In Whitehall

UPDATED: Tuesday February 26, 2013 8:07 AM

At least 10 residents living in a Whitehall apartment complex were evacuated after the complex caught fire early Tuesday morning.

Six units were damaged when flames broke out at The Commons at Royal Landing in the 4700 block of East Broad Street just before 2 A.M.

Crews told 10TV they arrived and found heavy smoke coming out of the apartment where the fire is believed to have started.

Nancy Willis was asleep in an adjacent apartment when the fire started, along with her two-year-old daughter.  “She was in her night clothes.  I just grabbed her out of the bed; just covered her face to make sure she didn't get any smoke inhalation.”

“It was really scary.  I thought my life was about to end.  I didn't know how close the smoke was.  I was worried about the smoke being in the wall,” Willis said.

Arson investigators were called to the scene to look into the cause of the fire.

Firefighters said they were checking out whether cooking may have been behind what sparked the blaze.

The Red Cross is helping three of the families displaced by the fire.
