Athens City Officials Close To Restoring Water To Community

UPDATED: Wednesday February 27, 2013 7:05 AM

It was a long day for water crews in Athens as they worked to restore water to the community following a break in the city’s main line.

Officials said that crews had to drain the reservoir at Highland Park to get water to a low level to make repairs.

The repair was finally completed around 4 p.m. and water service was expected to be back to everyone by evening, according to the Deputy Service Safety Director.

The city of Athens did issue a boil order until 10 p.m. on Wednesday.

The ruptured water line was right up the street from Linda Philips.

“About one in the morning, the biggest, about a 12 inch line broke. That is when we lost all of our water,” said Phillips.

It happened so fast, and without any warning, Philips said she had to make do with what little water she had in the house to get her daughter ready for school.

“We did have some bottled water, so I brushed my teeth, and my daughter brushed her teeth, with bottled water,” added Phillips.

While several businesses had to close because of the water issue, Perk’s Coffee Shop stayed open.

“I figured why not. It's a bad day, people are already sad they can't get caffeine, so they can get WiFi. That's still working,” said Nate Hayes.

Hayes, General Manager of Whit's Frozen Custard and Perk's Coffee Shop, said he had water throughout the shop until about 10:15 a.m.

He planned to at least sell the goodies he was able to prepare, but said the health department told him no.

Because of the break, Athens City Schools released high school and middle school students at 12:30 p.m. Elementary school students were scheduled to be dismissed at 1:30 p.m.

Ohio University classes continued as normal, although the school said some areas had low water pressure. Hot water was discontinued as a conservation measure.

Additionally, the following bans are imposed:

•    No washing of motor vehicles
•    No running of outdoor fountains, reflecting pools and artificial waterfalls
•    No non-agricultural plant watering
•    No filling of private swimming pools
