A Sunday fire at a vacant house has been determined to be an arson by the City of Newark Fire Marshal, according to The Newark Advocate.

The paper reported that the fire occurred at about 10:10 p.m. Sunday but was contained quickly and the scene was cleared within two hours.

The fire was reportedly started in an upstairs bedroom after clothes on top of a mattress were set on fire, the Advocate reported.

Multiple suspects are being considered by police.

Fire Marshal Tim Smith told the paper that said the suspects are likely associated with the property, which has been vacated due to a possible bug infestation and general uncleanliness.

Smith said the house was not regularly checked for squatters.
