Officers said they located five shell casings near Ohio University after responding to a report of shots fired early Wednesday.

According to Athens police, officers responded to the report at about 12:20 a.m. near East State Street and Morris Avenue.

After a brief investigation, a man was taken into custody about an hour later. A Hi-Point .9 mm gun was recovered a few blocks from the scene of the shooting.

Police said the man, identified as 35-year-old Steven Vance, hid the gun after firing shots.

Vance is charged with discharging a weapon from a public roadway and two counts of tampering with evidence.
