The public library system in Ohio's capital city is asking residents to lend their memories and mementos to be digitized and archived in its new Columbus African-American Historical Collection.

The library says the collection celebrates black history within the Columbus community. Mayor Michael Coleman is expected to participate in a Tuesday event to mark the launch of the collection.

The library says it hopes to expand the collection by scanning images of photos, postcards, journals, local maps and other keepsakes that residents lend to the project. The items must be identifiable, dated and not in violation of copyright restrictions.

The library also is accepting audio and video files and oral histories.
