Mount Vernon police said on Friday that investigators are treating the case of a man found dead after a house fire on Thursday as a homicide.

Knox County Coroner Jennifer Ogle told police that the man, identified as 52-year-old Brad Grosscup, died several days before the fire that occurred on Shirley Avenue.

Ogle said that no soot was found in the man’s airway and his body had started to decompose.

The cause of the fire, which sparked shortly after 7:30 p.m. on Valentine’s Day, was still under investigation.

Nine people lived in the apartments that caught fire. The Red Cross was called to assist.
