The Mount Vernon Fire Department responded to an apartment fire on Shirley Ave. Thursday evening.
Firefighters said one person died in the fire that started shortly after 7:30 p.m.
Nine people lived in the apartments and are being helped by the Red Cross.
“My biggest thing is, it's Valentine's Day and I'm thinking about his mom. It's a shame,” said neighbor Casie Carman.
The identity of the victim was not immediately available.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
