Police are working to get more information about a man who allegedly approached two boys near a Columbus elementary school on Tuesday.
According to a police report, two young boys were approached by a man near Sharon Woods Boulevard and Hearthstone Avenue in northeast Columbus at about 4:20 p.m.
According to the boys’ family, a similar thing happened to their daughter last June.
“It makes me worried, it makes me not let them walk home from school,” said mother Sascha Napier.
Napier said her 9 and 13-year-old sons were walking home along Sharon Woods Boulevard when a strange man attempted to grab her 9-year-old son. Instead, he grabbed the 9-year-old’s backpack.
“The guy started running after them and he pulled the youngest one’s backpack and started pulling him backwards,” Napier said.
One of the boy’s friends called after them, which started the man and he ran off, Napier said.
“He called them by name, and jogged off like nothing was going on,” Napier said.
The boys then ran to a home, where an adult called police.
Other parents said they were worried after hearing about the alleged incident.
“You certainly don’t want your kids out and about with somebody on the street like that; it’s scary,” parent Ronald Scott said.
Detectives said that they did not believe the case last year was connected to the most recent one, because the descriptions of the men differed.
Columbus City Schools officials said the district was investigating and was planning to send a note home with students on Wednesday.
A good description of the man who allegedly approached the boys was not immediately released.
