A man accused of drinking and driving before causing a fatal crash went to trial before a judge on Tuesday.
Marc Kraft, 45, was charged with seven felonies following the Nov. 8 crash on U.S. Route 23.
The crash killed Heidi Hecker and injured her 10-month-old daughter and her boyfriend, who was driving the vehicle at the time of the crash.
More than half a dozen witnesses took the stand on Tuesday.
Jane Zeisler described what she saw as she was driving along U.S. 23 on Nov. 8.
“As I saw him coming up behind me, he had been weaving in and out of cones before he got to my car,” Zeisler said. “I thought he was going to hit me or hurt somebody else.”
Zeisler said that moments later, she witnessed the vehicle Kraft was driving crash into the Subaru in which Hecker was riding.
Collin Nichols said that he helped pull 10-month-old Peyton and Hecker’s boyfriend, Brad Weaver, from the vehicle.
He said that he was helpless when he tried to get Hecker out of the Subaru.
“There was no way to get her out of the vehicle,” Nichols said. “The whole vehicle was wrapped around her. The fire department had to cut her out of the vehicle.”
Testimony presented also stated that Kraft had consumed four beers before the fatal crash. He also did not have a valid driver’s license and had six previous drunken-driving convictions.
The trail was slated to continue on Wednesday.
