14-Year-Old Charged With Murder In Southeast Columbus

UPDATED: Tuesday February 5, 2013 5:43 PM

A 14-year-old boy was charged with murder, aggravated robbery and tampering with evidence after a 64-year-old man was found dead Monday evening.

According to police, the 14-year-old was taken into custody after a child went to a neighbor’s home, located in the 3900 block of Elaine Place South, and said that there was a body in the basement.

A 64-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to juvenile court records, the teen had been sought by authorities since cutting off a GPS monitoring bracelet last week.

He has been in trouble before for chronic truancy and was placed on electronic monitoring after failing to pull over for officers and fleeing police on Jan. 20, records stated.

A police report stated that the teen lived at the address where the shooting occurred.

Neighbor Kesha Joseph said that she was shocked when she heard about the shooting.

“It was definitely a shock, especially because he’s so young,” Joseph said. “To know this happened in our neighborhood, we’re used to crime happening in this area for whatever reason, but so close to home, it’s kind of weird.”

The name of the man shot and killed was not immediately released. 10TV News did not release the name of the suspect, because he is a minor.
