A 48-year-old man was found guilty on Monday night in connection with his daughter-in-law’s murder.
William Inman Sr., 48, was convicted in the abduction, zip-tie strangulation and corpse abuse of his 25-year-old daughter-in-law, Summer D. Inman, on March 22, 2011.
Besides two counts of aggravated murder, the jury convicted him of single counts of murder, kidnapping, tampering with evidence and gross abuse of a corpse.
The jury deliberated for about 2 1/2 hours before reaching the verdict.
The prosecutor said Inman ruled the family and wanted to help his son, who was in a child custody dispute with Summer Inman as they went through a divorce.
"If she's not there, who would get custody of the children, their father and his parents," said Assistant Attorney General Paul Scarsella.
But Inman's attorney argued that it was the son who killed Summer.
The defense said the elder Inman and his wife helped kidnap their daughter-in-law to talk about concerns over their grandchildren and then tried to cover up their son's crime.
Scarsella said the three were all involved in Summer’s murder.
“Complicity, all three of them acting together aiding and abetting ... all three of them are working together,” he said. “It doesn't matter who tied the zip tie around summer's neck, it doesn't matter who she was looking at when they pulled it tight under her ear, all three of them were working together."
However, Inman’s attorney defended his client’s role in the murder in court Monday.
"First of all, you've had no evidence. Second, the state's not even disagreeing at this point! They're standing up here saying we don't have to prove that. Don't you think that's relevant? Who actually took her life in a murder trial," he said.
Attorneys held up weapons Monday in court that they said were found in Inman Sr.'s home. They argued that if he had wanted to kill Summer, he would have taken the weapons with him.
Inman's son and wife were convicted in the murder and currently are imprisoned.
Inman was slated to begin on Wednesday. He could face the death penalty.
