Marion Mother Says Man Tried To Snatch Baby From Her Arms

UPDATED: Friday February 1, 2013 10:19 AM

A young mother said that she was walking in Marion on Wednesday when a man ran toward her and tried to steal her 16-month-old baby.

The mother, who did not want to be identified because she feared for her safety, said that she was walking in the 100 block of Silver Street when a man got out of his vehicle.

“He kept saying, ‘It’s my baby, my baby,’ and trying to pull her away from her,” said the baby’s grandmother, who spoke for the mother. “She sat there and told him straight out, ‘I’m going to pull out my gun and shoot you.’ And it wasn’t a gun, of course, it was her phone.”

The threat was enough to spook the stranger and send him running in the direction of Oak Street.

“She had no idea who this gentleman was, so we don’t know if he has mental issues, drug or alcohol problems, who knows?” said Lt. Dave Clark with the Marion Police Department.

Marion police said that they canvassed the area but did not find anyone who knew anything about the alleged incident.

Though no one was injured, the family is shaken.

“I walked into the bedroom probably 20 times last night to make sure they were both alright,” the grandmother said.

She said that the family would not have peace until the man is off the streets.

“Just sitting on pins and needles until he’s caught,” the grandmother said.
