Business development officials say they are worried about the Dayton area's reliance on Wright-Patterson Air Force base with defense cuts likely looming.

Dayton Development Coalition executives say the dependence on the Air Force base as an economic engine leaves the area vulnerable to defense spending cuts that could start in a few weeks.

The Dayton Daily News reports that the base is responsible for $3.4 billion in annual payroll for employees inside and outside the base fence. Wright-Patterson has more than 29,000 military and civilian personnel, including contractors and private businesses.

The leader of a major Air Force command at the base said this week that budget uncertainties and a projected funding shortfall require immediate spending cuts.

The Dayton Development Coalition coordinates economic development in 14 southwest Ohio counties.
