Dayton Development Coalition executives say the dependence on the Air Force base as an economic engine leaves the area vulnerable to defense spending cuts that could start in a few weeks.
The Dayton Daily News reports that the base is responsible for $3.4 billion in annual payroll for employees inside and outside the base fence. Wright-Patterson has more than 29,000 military and civilian personnel, including contractors and private businesses.
The leader of a major Air Force command at the base said this week that budget uncertainties and a projected funding shortfall require immediate spending cuts.
