There have been multiple highway pileups involving dozens of vehicles in Ohio on Monday.
Authorities said as many as 50 vehicles could be involved in a pileup on Interstate 75 in southwest Ohio.
Media outlets report a separate accident involving at least 10 vehicles has closed I-275 outside Cincinnati.
A 12-year-old girl died in the crash after being struck by a cable median barrier. She had gotten out of her damaged vehicle and was standing in the median when she was struck, according to the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office.
A dispatcher at the State Highway Patrol says the I-75 crash occurred Monday in the southbound lanes under whiteout conditions, between the cities of Middletown and Monroe. The dispatcher says minor injuries have been reported.
Twenty-nine vehicles were involved in a pileup that closed I-270 south at S.R. 161 in central Ohio. Four people were hospitalized out of the crash that occurred at about 12:30 p.m.
Another crash was reported in Richland County at about 2 p.m. Ohio State Highway Patrol officials said that four semis and at least 15 other vehicles were involved in that crash. Injuries were unknown.
Interstate 71 north at I-670 near Downtown Columbus was closed at about 3:30 p.m. Monday because of a crash involving at least two semis and other vehicles.
Scattered snow showers were expected in parts of Ohio on Monday, with some pockets of heavier snowfall. National Weather Service forecasters had said that could reduce visibility and produce a quick coating of snow.
