A man who showed up at a hospital matching the description of a robbery suspect who was shot was arrested.

According to police, James Thompson attempted to rob 34-year-old Kelby Smith as he was getting out of his car in his west Columbus driveway.

Police said that 44-year-old Thompson held a gun and demanded money from Smith, who set his 2-month-old son down in his car carrier and shielded him.

As the alleged robber put the gun to Smiths’ forehead, Smith handed over cash, police said.

Smith, a concealed carry weapon permit holder, pulled his gun and shot the alleged robber as he was fleeing the scene.

According to police, a man matching the description of the alleged robber showed up at Mount Carmel West Hospital a short time later.

He was taken into surgery and arrested for aggravated robbery. Police said that Thompson’s DNA matched blood recovered from the scene of the robbery and shooting.
