A western Ohio police department is mourning the loss of one of its officers who was killed in a traffic crash.

Investigators are still trying to determine what caused the Wednesday crash that killed 59-year-old David Yaney. He was a 33-year veteran of the Trotwood police department in suburban Dayton.

The Dayton Daily News reports that Yaney's pickup truck drove off an Englewood road, hit a guardrail and went airborne into a creek just before dawn. Divers were called to recover the body.

Police are waiting on an autopsy that could help determine the cause of the accident.

Yaney, a Trotwood native and Vietnam veteran, joined the city's police force in 1979.
