A Columbus Division of Fire officer was placed on administrative duty after an alleged road rage incident last week while on duty.
According to Battalion Chief Patrick Ferguson, arson investigator Jeffrey L. Smith was placed on administrative duty and had his weapon removed on Thursday.
An unofficial police report from the Columbus Division of Police stated that Smith, 49, pointed a gun at another driver shortly before 11 a.m. on Jan. 2.
The Columbus Dispatch reported that Smith told police that he saw the other driver, identified as 35-year-old James Michael Watkins, flash a gun inside of his vehicle near Jack Gibbs Boulevard and Cleveland Avenues.
The Dispatch reported that Smith got out of his vehicle, ordered Watkins out of his vehicle at gunpoint, placed Watkins in handcuffs and called police.
Watkins is charged with aggravated menacing.
According to the Dispatch, Smith and Watkins were acquaintances prior to the alleged incident.
Ferguson said that the alleged incident was under investigation.
